In 2011, fifty-five (55) of the largest 100 US cities added manufacturing jobs, according to G. Scott Thomas of The Business Journals. Detroit added more manufacturing jobs than any other US city, adding more than 11,000. Houston, Seattle, Cincinnati and San Jose all added more than 5000 jobs each.

The overall unemployment rate fell by another two tenths of a percentage point to 8.3 percent in January. It was 8.5 percent in December and was 9.1 percent a year earlier in January 2011. Since August, the overall rate has fallen eight tenths of a percentage point and marks the fifth consecutive month where the overall unemployment rate has decreased.
